Here are the steps on how to use a menstrual cup:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Fold the menstrual cup into a C-shape or punch-down fold to make it easier to insert.
- Relax your pelvic muscles and insert the folded cup into your vagina, aiming it towards the back of the vagina and slightly downward. You may also find it helpful to use a water-based lubricant to help with insertion.
- Once the cup is inside, let it unfold and create a seal against the vaginal walls. You can check if the cup has fully opened by gently pulling the stem and feeling for resistance.
- Use the stem to adjust the position of the cup if needed. It should sit comfortably in your vagina and not cause any discomfort or leakage.
- To remove the cup, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then gently pull on the stem until you can reach the base of the cup. Pinch the base of the cup to release the seal and ease it out of your vagina.
- Once you have removed the cup, empty the contents into the toilet or sink, rinse the cup with water, and reinsert it. If you are in a public restroom, you can wipe the cup clean with toilet paper or you might like to take a bottle of water with you to rinse directly into the toilet before re-inserting.
It is important to note that menstrual cups should be emptied and cleaned at least twice a day, or more frequently if you have heavy menstrual flow. Additionally, menstrual cups should be sterilized before and after each cycle, and replaced depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. With practice, using a menstrual cup can become more comfortable and convenient than using disposable menstrual products.
